MiG-3, 1/48, Ark Models

Postby PlasticPaddy » Mon Oct 05, 2015 12:35 pm

Got going on this wee lad not long ago and have the engine and cockpit nearly done.

The kit is decent enough and fit seems quite good although not without issues. The decals look were approximately half a mile thick and I guess some sort of industrial grade micro-sol would be needed to flatten them. In any case I ended up using some spare decals for the cockpit dials as a result and may get myself some other decals elsewhere for wings and fuselage.

The paint colours given in the kit are simplistic to say the least leading to some re painting following some research. For example what should be a pale blue (interior) was listed as light grey and 'dark grey' seems more like black in photos of the engine on line.

There is no PE in the kit so made some tea soaked seatbelts. Had to cut a slot in the back of the pilot's seat to accommodate them and am now trying to figure out how to make decent scratch built buckles. Made a couple of seat adjuster wheels out of brass pipe too and added some detail to the inside of the fuselage with some guitar string...

Slowly but surely getting there... :o0

Paper, tea, lead wire, a spare bit of photo etch, brass pipe, a hacksaw, and a touch of super glue...

So there I was, happily looking forward to getting some paint on this little guy when suddenly... what had proved to be a nicely fitting kit decided to undo its growing reputation and deal up some unwelcome 'issues'. The nose/wing junction pieces on the underside were a little out!! With the detail around the nose on this aircraft, sanding had to be careful!!

A coat of primer will show a multitude I fear :(

Anyway... onward!

Wow, Fantastic work there and then bang the wing root is horrendous!! what is it with all the info, Laser Scanning, CAD and all the other tech stuff available modern day kits still have some howlers fit wise.
Cheers
