Made In Ireland

Postby Georgeconna » Wed Nov 14, 2012 11:49 pm

I heard about this a while back but never seen one till this week. It is a Belgian Engine but the quirky bit is that it was actually made in Shannon by a Company called HDI for Jouef. It is very basic, No interior, One axle power and no lights. Probably around 30 years old.

heres two shots

Jouef could not enter the UK market so they tried the next best thing, the back door.
HDI. Hobies Development Ireland, was set up in the IDA section at Shannon
The company lasted about 2 years and went wallop
Some interesting models produced, specially the Irish range, check them out on the link

Met a guy who had a family member that worked there and acquired boxes of the stuff, this was one that was liberated, Quick service and it was handed back to the owner

I bought some of the stock from a chap who was involved in selling all of the plant when the factory closed down
Some of the models had "Made in France" stamped on the base but were actually made in Ireland
Cost of changing the mold from France to Ireland was very expensive and they were gradually changing it as stock sold.
Some other models had a hole drilled in the base which hid the country of manufacture
Track was also manufactured in Shannon and there was a box of loose bits with the stock I picked up
